At The Ridge, the shARed spaces team worked with children, youth, and Elders and guided two workshops:
- 3D scanning using KIRI Engine and WIDAR
- Sound recording using the mobile app EZAudioCut(MT) Lite (for iOS). We also had AudioLab: audio editor recorder (for Android) in our back pocket but didn’t end up needing to use this as we had enough iOS devices.
- An introduction Hoverlay was provided to demonstrate how participants can bring their models and audio files into augmented reality.
These workshops were offered in response to interest in scanning objects within community to create an archive or library of historically significant artifacts. There is also interest in the creation of augmented reality experiences at various sites around The Ridge. Examples include a walk or tour that includes AR sound and image markers at particular places to activate oral histories, storytelling, and truth-telling.
A brief introduction to Hoverlay was provided in the second workshop to demonstrate how these ideas could be carried out. Scanned objects and sound recordings made and edited during the workshops were used to create five augmented reality experiences.
The shARed spaces team was welcomed into community and was gifted stories about the history of the land and the horrors of the local residential school. The generosity extended to our team aids in our understanding and our ongoing efforts in empathetic listening.
